Jaipur, 12 November: A 23-year-old student returning from her college in Jaipur was tragically killed when a speeding bus of the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) hit the scooter on which she was travelling and then ran over her. The accident took place on Monday afternoon near the Central Park gate on Prithviraj Road, Tonk Road.
The bus, heading from the Alwar depot, collided from the rear with the scooter carrying the student, identified as Tanvi Chawariya, who was on the pillion seat. She was thrown onto the road and the bus tyre tragically passed over her head, causing her immediate death. The scooter-taxi driver suffered minor injuries, and both the bus driver and the scooter driver fled the scene following the crash.
In response, RSRTC has announced that it will request the transport department to revoke the bus driver’s licence and has blacklisted the contract agency which supplied the driver, citing serious lapses in safety and oversight. The corporation noted that in 2024-25, accidents involving RSRTC buses dropped by 19% and fatalities by 33%, but highlighted that about 800 out of over 5,000 drivers are contracted, presenting a challenge in enforcing consistent safety training.
Police have registered a case of death by negligence and the investigation is underway. Families and motorists are reportedly calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and safer driver hiring practices for public-transport buses.
