Jaipur, 17 November: A 36-year-old government school teacher who also served as a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Jaipur has died by suicide, his family alleges the intense workload and threats of suspension forced his hand.
Police say the victim, identified as Mukesh Kumar Jangid of Kalwad village, left home early Sunday on his motorcycle, parked near Bindayaka railway crossing and jumped in front of a train. A suicide note was reportedly found in his pocket, in which he named senior officials and blamed continuous pressure linked to the SIR exercise for his decision.
According to family members, Jangid was simultaneously performing duties as a teacher and a BLO in Jhotwara area and had been receiving constant “reminders and threats of suspension” for incomplete work related to the voter-list revision.
The incident has caused alarm among government employees engaged in election duties. The All Rajasthan State Employees Joint Federation (Unified) stated that the “punishing workload” placed upon BLOs under the SIR process, especially when school term exams and other duties are ongoing, is unsustainable and requires urgent corrective action.
Police have registered a case and seized the note. An inquiry is underway to examine the exact circumstances and whether procedural lapses or pressure tactics contributed to the tragedy. The electoral office and school department have been urged to review support systems for persons handling dual responsibilities.
The family is calling for assurances that such excessive work burdens will be addressed and that support systems will be put in place so that those tasked with SIR and other duties are not over-pressed to the point of crisis.
