Jaipur, 17 November 2025: A tragic case has come to light in Rajasthan, where a government school teacher reportedly died by suicide, citing intense pressure from election-related duties.
The deceased has been identified as Mukesh Jangid (aged 48), posted at the Government Primary School in Nahri ka Bas, Jaipur district. He was also assigned the role of Booth Level Officer (BLO), tasked with the extensive revision of electoral rolls under the special intensive revision (SIR) process.
According to police, Jangid left home on his motorcycle early that morning and later jumped in front of a train at the Bindayaka railway crossing. A note recovered from his pocket mentioned that his supervisor, identified only as “Sitaram”, had warned him of suspension for failing to complete SIR-related tasks.
Family members say that Jangid had been distressed for several days as a result of the mounting work pressure. The local teachers’ association in Rajasthan has expressed outrage, stating that the competitive ranking of BLOs across states, districts and subdivisions is placing unsustainable burdens on field staff.
Police say a death report has been filed, and the matter is under investigation. The family has criticised the fact that an FIR has reportedly not been registered yet and have demanded proper accountability.
Key issues raised:
- The SIR process for electoral-roll revision imposes demanding targets and schedules on BLOs, often in addition to their primary duties.
- The overlap of teaching responsibilities and election-field work creates a dual workload which some staff say is unmanageable.
- The case draws attention to the mental-health impact of administrative pressure on public-sector employees.
Next steps:
Authorities are expected to review the workload and oversight mechanisms for BLOs assigned to SIR tasks. The teachers’ association has indicated it will submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister urging a reduction in numerical targets and a greater emphasis on quality.
