Jaipur, 18 November: Jaipur, the iconic Pink City of India, marks its 298th Foundation Day today, celebrating nearly three centuries of architectural brilliance, cultural richness and visionary urban planning. Founded on 18 November 1727, Jaipur stands as one of the world’s earliest and most beautifully planned cities.
A Visionary City Born in 1727
The city was established by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who envisioned a new capital that could support a growing population, expand trade and offer better civic planning. Designed with a rare blend of science, architecture and tradition, Jaipur was crafted using principles of Vastu Shastra and astronomy.
City architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya laid out Jaipur on a precise grid pattern wide streets, walled perimeters and neatly divided markets making it a model of urban organization long before modern planning techniques emerged.
A Symbol of Architecture and Culture
Jaipur’s distinctive identity comes from its harmonious fusion of forts, palaces, temples and vibrant bazaars. The old city’s uniform terracotta-pink colour, introduced in the 19th century to welcome a royal guest, later became a symbol of its cultural warmth and hospitality.
From the majestic Amer Fort and City Palace to the iconic Hawa Mahal and bustling Johari Bazaar, every corner of Jaipur reflects a story of royal legacy and artistic excellence.
From a Modest Town to a Thriving Metropolis
What began as a well-planned town with a modest population has today transformed into a dynamic urban centre. Jaipur is now a major hub for tourism, gemstones, traditional crafts, IT services and education balancing heritage with modern growth.
Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future
As the city celebrates its 298th year, Jaipur continues to evolve while honouring its legacy. Conservation of heritage structures, improvements in urban mobility, and expansion of modern infrastructure reflect the city’s commitment to progress without losing its historic soul.
A Day of Pride for Rajasthan
Jaipur Foundation Day is not just a celebration of its past, it is a tribute to a city that has embraced diversity, innovation and cultural pride for nearly three centuries. Today, residents and admirers across the globe honour the journey of this timeless city, which remains one of India’s most treasured destinations.
