The city was established by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who envisioned a new capital that could support a growing population, expand trade and offer better civic planning. City architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya laid out Jaipur on a precise grid pattern wide streets, walled perimeters and neatly divided markets making it a model of urban organization long before modern planning techniques emerged.
