Jaipur, January 8, 2026: Jaipur and large parts of Rajasthan are currently enduring one of the harshest winter spells in recent years as a severe cold wave combines with very dense fog, leading to widespread disruption of daily life.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Jaipur has been placed under an Orange alert with a “Severe Cold Day” classification. Early morning minimum temperatures dropped to around 6–7°C, with daytime highs struggling to reach near 19°C, significantly below normal for this time of year. Visibility in many parts of the city plunged to near-zero levels due to thick fog, creating hazardous travel conditions on roads, railways, and at the airport.
Local weather services also reported that Jaipur recorded its lowest temperature of the season at 4.4°C, making it colder than major northern cities like Delhi and Amritsar. Several other regions across Rajasthan logged record low minimums as the cold wave shows no immediate signs of relief.
In response to the extreme weather, the Jaipur district administration has announced school closures to protect children from exposure to severe cold and dense fog. Pre-primary to Class 5 schools will remain closed until January 10, while classes 6 to 8 were shut on January 8 itself, although staff are required to report for duty.
The persistent fog has slowed traffic and stranded commuters on major routes, while flight and train schedules have seen delays and cancellations. Authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel during early morning and late evening hours, use fog lights, and take precautions against the bitter chill.
Meteorologists predict that the cold wave and foggy conditions are likely to continue over the next few days, with gradual improvement expected only after January 12 as the weather system weakens.
