Makar Sankranti in Jaipur: Festive Spirit Marred by Tragic Kite-Flying Accidents

Jaipur, January 15, 2026: Jaipur celebrated Makar Sankranti with traditional enthusiasm on Wednesday, marked by vibrant kite flying, temple visits and community gatherings. However, the joyous festive spirit turned sombre for many as kite-flying related accidents left several people injured and claimed multiple lives.

Residents from across the city took part in the annual tradition of flying kites, with rooftops and open grounds buzzing with excitement throughout the day. Devotees also thronged sacred places such as the Govind Devji and Galtaji temples, where prayers and rituals were held for prosperity and good harvest.

Accidents During Kite Flying

Amid the celebrations, multiple incidents occurred while participants indulged in kite flying, a customary highlight of Makar Sankranti. Sharp kite strings, commonly coated with abrasive material known as “manja,” were reportedly involved in several accidents.

According to reports, two children lost their lives during the festivities. One incident involved an 11-year-old boy, Arpit, who tragically fell into an open drain while chasing a kite, and later succumbed to his injuries. In another heartbreaking case, a 6-year-old boy, Dhir, sustained fatal neck injuries after coming into contact with a kite string. Both incidents plunged their families and communities into grief.

In addition to the fatalities, dozens of people sustained injuries and were rushed to local hospitals for treatment. Police and medical sources indicate that many victims suffered cuts and abrasions from kite strings or injuries from falls while flying kites on rooftops and other elevated areas.

Safety Concerns Highlighted

The incidents have raised urgent safety concerns around kite flying during festivals. While Makar Sankranti is traditionally associated with sky-high kite battles, the use of dangerous materials like glass-coated or synthetic kite strings can pose serious risks to participants and bystanders alike.

Authorities and civic agencies are expected to review public safety advisories following the accidents, and residents are being urged to exercise caution, especially in areas with open drains, power lines or heavy rooftop activity.

Mixed Emotions Across the City

Despite the tragic occurrences, many Jaipur residents expressed pride in the city’s vibrant celebration of tradition and culture. Families gathered to enjoy seasonal Rajasthani delicacies, take part in temple rituals, and spend time together outdoors. But for the families affected by the accidents, the festival will be remembered with deep sorrow.

As Jaipur reflects on this year’s Makar Sankranti, authorities and community leaders are expected to emphasize greater awareness and safety in future celebrations to ensure that the vibrant spirit of the festival remains unmarred.
