Jaipur Begins Trial of AC Electric Buses; Over 300 Likely to Hit Roads by June

Jaipur, February 27, 2026: Jaipur has taken a major step toward modern and eco-friendly public transport with the launch of trial runs of new air-conditioned electric buses in the city. The trials, initiated by Jaipur City Transport Services Limited (JCTSL), began on Thursday and will continue until February 28, after which authorities will evaluate performance before starting regular commercial operations.

Jaipur Begins Trial of AC Electric Buses

During the trial phase, both 9-metre and 12-metre electric buses are being tested across key city routes to assess technical performance, battery efficiency, charging capability, and passenger comfort. Engineers are also monitoring how the buses perform under heavy traffic conditions and varying load capacities.

Modern, Comfortable and Environment-Friendly Transport

The new electric buses are expected to offer improved commuter experience with air-conditioning, smoother rides, and significantly reduced noise levels compared to conventional diesel buses. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise Jaipur’s public transport system and reduce air pollution in the city.

Officials said the buses will also feature advanced safety and passenger-friendly amenities such as GPS tracking, CCTV surveillance, panic buttons, automatic doors, and accessibility provisions for differently-abled passengers.

Over 300 Electric Buses Expected by June

If the trials are successful, Jaipur could see a major expansion of its electric bus fleet in the coming months. Authorities plan to introduce more than 300 electric buses in phases by June 2026, significantly strengthening the city’s public transport infrastructure.

Under the central government’s PM e-Bus initiative, Rajasthan is set to receive a large allocation of electric buses, with Jaipur among the priority cities. In the first phase alone, around 150 buses are expected to be deployed from Bagru and Todi depots, supported by dedicated charging infrastructure and maintenance facilities.

Potential Relief for Commuters

The introduction of new electric buses comes at a crucial time, as parts of Jaipur’s existing bus fleet are nearing retirement. The new additions are expected to improve connectivity, reduce dependency on private vehicles, and help ease traffic congestion in the rapidly growing city.

Officials believe that transitioning to electric mobility will not only reduce fuel costs and emissions but also contribute to Jaipur’s long-term goal of sustainable urban transport.

Next Steps

Following the completion of trials, authorities will finalize operational plans, including routes, deployment schedules, and commercial launch timelines. If all parameters meet expectations, residents may soon begin commuting on Jaipur’s new fleet of modern AC electric buses within the next few months.
