Jaipur, 29 Dec 2025: A 19-year-old engineering student allegedly died by suicide on Saturday after he was caught cheating during a college examination in Jaipur, police said. The incident has sparked concern and an ongoing investigation into student stress and academic pressures.
The deceased, identified as Priyanshu Raj, was a first-year computer science student at a private institution in Jaipur and a native of Patna, Bihar. He had appeared for a semester examination on Saturday afternoon and was reportedly apprehended by invigilators for carrying notes and allegedly cheating. His answer sheet and examination materials were confiscated before he left the exam centre.
After leaving the college campus around early evening, Priyanshu rented a scooter and travelled nearly five kilometres to an under-construction multi-storey building in the Bagru area of Jaipur. Around 12th floor of the building, he allegedly jumped to his death, according to police. Construction workers alerted authorities after hearing a loud sound and found him critically injured. He was rushed to the Bagru Community Health Centre, where doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered Priyanshu’s bag and mobile phone at the scene, which helped identify him. A preliminary investigation found no suicide note, and authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to understand the full circumstances leading to the tragedy. The police have termed the case a suspected suicide, pending further inquiry.
Student Stress and Mental Health Concerns
While the exact motives behind Priyanshu’s actions are still under investigation, officials and experts note that academic pressure and fear of consequences can be significant stressors for students. Instances of extreme anxiety and distress among students have been increasingly reported across educational institutions. Mental health professionals and educators have repeatedly called for stronger support systems and counselling services to help students cope with academic challenges and emotional struggles.
The Jaipur police have appealed to the college management and student community to cooperate with the probe. They also urged students and parents to remain vigilant about stress signs and seek professional help when needed.
