Jaipur, Rajasthan – November 6, 2025
A shocking road tragedy unfolded in Jaipur’s Harmada industrial area on Monday afternoon when a speeding dumper truck lost control and ploughed into multiple vehicles on the New Loha Mandi Road. The massive collision resulted in 13 deaths and more than 10 serious injuries, sparking widespread outrage and questions over road safety and enforcement.
How the accident happened
According to CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, the dumper was moving at extremely high speed – estimated at over 100 km/h when it rammed into stationary vehicles waiting at a traffic signal.
The truck crushed:
- Cars
- Bikes
- Auto-rickshaws
- Pedestrians
The impact was so severe that some victims were thrown several metres away, and vehicles were left mangled beyond recognition.
One eyewitness described the scene as “a massacre people were screaming, vehicles were crushed like paper.”
Driver arrested admits being drunk
The driver, identified as Kalyan Meena, attempted to flee but was caught after a short chase. During interrogation, he confessed to drinking alcohol twice before driving the heavy vehicle:
- Once in the morning after leaving home
- Again near Benar Road before entering the city limits
Police have booked him under charges of:
- Culpable homicide not amounting to murder (IPC Sec. 304)
- Rash and negligent driving
- Driving under influence
The Jaipur RTO has initiated proceedings to permanently cancel his driving licence.
Not the first offence
Further investigation revealed that a case had already been registered against the same driver a year ago for reckless driving involving another dumper. However, no strict action was taken at that time.
Locals claim that illegal dumper and mining vehicles frequently pass through the area at dangerous speeds, and authorities have repeatedly ignored complaints.
Victims & emergency response
Most of the victims were local workers and commuters who were returning home after lunch. Rescue teams and passers-by pulled victims from crushed vehicles until ambulances arrived.
The injured are undergoing treatment at SMS Hospital Trauma Center.
State Government announced:
- Ex-gratia compensation for families of the deceased (amount to be finalized)
- A special investigation team (SIT) to review road safety compliance
WHAT WENT WRONG?
Initial findings suggest:
| Factor | Findings |
|---|---|
| High speed | Vehicle was travelling over 100 km/h in a busy industrial zone |
| Drunk driving | Driver admitted consumption of alcohol twice |
| Route violation | Heavy vehicles are banned on that route during afternoon traffic |
| No speed checks | Lack of functioning speed-guns or barricades |
New orders after the accident
Following public outrage, Jaipur Police and the Transport Department have issued:
✔ Increased enforcement against drunk driving
✔ Road safety audit at accident-prone junctions
✔ Crackdown on illegal dumper routes and over-loaded vehicles
Authorities have directed all police stations to enforce drunk driving checks on heavy vehicles every evening.
Officials Speak

A preventable tragedy
