Jaipur Metro Phase-2 DPR Approved, Awaits Union Cabinet Nod

Jaipur, 12 Dec 2015: A major stride has been made in expanding urban transit in the Pink City as the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Jaipur Metro Phase-2 has been approved by the central government’s Public Investment Board (PIB). The project now awaits the final clearance from the Union Cabinet before formal work orders can be issued and construction begins.

In a meeting held in New Delhi, senior officials from various central ministries reviewed the DPR presented by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation (RMRC) Managing Director Vaibhav Galaria. The approval from the PIB chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Expenditure marks the first green signal for the long-awaited Phase-2 of Jaipur Metro. A detailed cabinet note will be prepared and routed through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Finance before the final decision by the Union Cabinet.

Project Scope and Connectivity
Phase-2 proposes a transformative corridor of approximately 42.80 km spanning key zones of Jaipur, enhancing connectivity across residential, commercial, and transport hubs. The expanded network will feature 36 stations 34 elevated and 2 underground linking areas including the Sitapura Industrial Area, VKI, Jaipur Airport, Jaipur Railway Station, Gandhi Nagar Railway Station, SMS Stadium and Hospital, Collectorate, Vidyadhar Nagar, Ambabari, Tonk Road, Sikar Road and other vital localities.

The cost of the project is estimated at around ₹12,260 crore. Under the first package, metro construction from Prahladpura to Pinjrapole Gaushala has already seen tenders submitted, with the technical evaluation process set to begin soon.

Next Steps
While the DPR clearance signals strong support from central ministries, the final Union Cabinet approval is essential before contracts are awarded and on-ground work can begin. Officials anticipate that this final sanction may arrive in the coming weeks potentially as early as January after which the metro expansion will take off with full momentum.

Once completed, Phase-2 is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve commuter convenience, and drive economic activity across Jaipur reinforcing the city’s push toward a modern and sustainable urban transit framework.
