JDA Issues Notice to ‘Lord Shiva’ for Illegal Encroachment; Sparks Outrage in Jaipur

Jaipur, 27 November: In a move that has stirred widespread controversy, Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has issued a notice to Lord Shiva or more precisely, to the custodians of a temple housing His idol alleging “illegal occupation” of land.

According to the notice, the temple complex is built on land claimed to be under the jurisdiction of JDA, and the authorities have demanded a response within seven days. Failure to comply, JDA warns, could trigger legal action including eviction.

The decision has provoked anger among locals and devotees. For many, the symbolic act of “serving a notice to God” has crossed a line, igniting a debate about the boundaries of administrative enforcement when it comes to places of worship.

Local media reports indicate that the temple in question was identified during a larger crackdown on unauthorised constructions and encroachments within the city. Officials claim that even religious structures must comply with urban-planning laws if they stand on government or restricted land.

The controversy comes at a time when JDA has recently intensified efforts to clear illegal constructions across Jaipur, following directives from the courts to remove unauthorised colonies and encroachments.

As protests mount and public emotions run high, the temple’s caretakers have reportedly filed an appeal seeking respite, arguing that the site has been used for worship for decades and that the notice insults religious sentiments. A response from JDA is awaited.
