Jaipur, January 5, 2026: A biting cold wave combined with dense morning fog has once again engulfed Rajasthan, bringing life in the state, especially in the Pink City of Jaipur to a standstill. The chilling weather conditions have disrupted normal routines, transportation and posed challenges for residents as temperatures continue to remain well below seasonal averages.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), large swathes of the state experienced dense to very dense fog, with visibility dropping to as low as around 50 metres in several areas, greatly affecting road travel and daily commutes.
The ongoing cold wave has been attributed to active western disturbances and prevailing weather systems impacting northwestern India, which have also triggered isolated rainfall in pockets of the state. Sirohi district was among the coldest recorded, with temperatures plunging to around 7.2°C, reflecting the severity of the chill.
In Jaipur, the state capital known for its historic palaces and vibrant culture, early morning fog has shrouded streets and delayed vehicular movement, complicating daily life for commuters. The Met office forecasts that the cold wave conditions will intensify over the coming days, with further dip in minimum temperatures expected, prolonging the harsh winter spell and persistent foggy mornings.
The adverse weather has also affected highways and major routes across Rajasthan, including vital stretches connecting Bikaner–Sriganganagar and Dausa–Bharatpur, where motorists have had to drive cautiously or slow down significantly due to poor visibility.
Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions during the early hours, particularly while travelling, and to keep updated on weather advisories as the cold wave persists.
