Jaipur, 26 Dec 2025: Communal tension and violence broke out early Friday morning in Chomu town near Jaipur as a dispute over encroachment and removal of structures outside a mosque escalated, leading to stone-pelting at police personnel and the suspension of mobile internet services in the area.
According to police and eyewitness reports, the incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. near the bus stand when authorities attempted to remove iron railings and other encroachments that had been erected along the road adjacent to a local mosque. These structures were seen as obstructing traffic and pedestrian movement, and authorities had earlier reached an agreement with community representatives to clear stones that had been lying in the area.
However, after some stones were removed with consent on Thursday evening, iron railings began to be installed again at the site, reigniting tensions. When police personnel moved in to remove these railings as part of enforcement of the agreement and anti-encroachment efforts, a section of the crowd allegedly turned hostile.
Stone-Pelting and Police Injuries
As tensions escalated, miscreants in the crowd started pelting stones at the police force, injuring several officers. Initial reports vary on the exact number, with some sources saying four policemen were injured while others put the figure at six. The injured officers were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
In response to the violence, police used tear gas shells and mild force, including lathi-charge, to disperse the unruly crowd and bring the situation under control. Additional police contingents were called in from nearby stations, including Harmada, Daulatpura, Vishwakarma, and others, to bolster security and prevent further unrest.
Senior police officers, including Additional Police Commissioner Dr. Rajiv Pachar, DCP Hanuman Prasad Meena and Additional DCP Rajesh Gupta arrived at the scene to assess the situation and coordinate the response. They appealed to local residents to maintain peace and refrain from spreading misinformation.
Internet Suspension and Security Measures
As a precautionary step, the district administration ordered the suspension of mobile internet and social media services in Chomu from 7:00 a.m. on December 26 until 7:00 a.m. on December 27. The restriction covers all mobile data services, including 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, and popular platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and X (Twitter). Voice calls and broadband services remain operational. The move aims to curb the spread of rumours and prevent further escalation of tensions.
The situation, while currently under control, remains tense with a heavy police presence across key areas of Chomu town. Authorities have formed special teams to identify and take action against those involved in the violent stone-pelting.
Background and Appeal for Calm
Policemen at the scene emphasized that the removal of stones and encroachments was intended to improve traffic flow and public convenience, and that the operation was carried out after discussions with community leaders. Police have warned against circulating misleading information on social platforms and urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement.
Local administration and police officials continue to monitor developments closely and are in touch with community representatives to ensure that peace and harmony are restored in the area.
