Jaipur, April 5, 2026: A major public health scare has emerged in Rajasthan’s capital after hundreds of residents reportedly fell ill due to contaminated drinking water in the Civil Lines area of Jaipur. The incident occurred in Ward 45 of Sushilpura locality, where sewage is suspected to have mixed with the municipal water supply, affecting hundreds of households.

According to local reports, more than 500 residents have fallen sick, with several complaining of symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, fever, and nausea. Children and elderly residents appear to be among the worst affected.
Water Contamination Suspected After Pipeline Damage
Residents allege that the problem began after road construction work in the area damaged underground water and sewer pipelines, allowing sewage water to seep into the drinking water supply. For several days, people reported receiving yellowish, foul-smelling water from their taps, raising serious health concerns in the locality.
Sushilpura, which falls under the Civil Lines constituency, has around 700–800 houses, and residents claim that almost every household has had at least one member fall ill after consuming the contaminated water. Many families have now stopped using the municipal supply for drinking and are relying on water tankers or packaged drinking water instead.
Protests and Public Anger
The incident has triggered anger among residents, who staged protests and confronted local authorities over the issue. During one such visit, Civil Lines MLA Gopal Sharma faced protests from residents demanding immediate action to restore safe water supply.
Opposition leaders have also raised questions about the state government’s handling of the crisis, especially since the Civil Lines area is considered a VIP zone where the residences of the Chief Minister, Governor, and several ministers are located.
Administration Steps In
Following the health scare, teams from the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) and the health department have been deployed to the affected area. Authorities have begun supplying clean water through tankers and distributing medicines to residents. Efforts are also underway to identify the exact source of contamination and repair the damaged pipelines.
Local health facilities have reported a surge in patients suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms over the past few days. Officials say they are monitoring the situation closely and working to restore normal water supply as soon as possible.
A Growing Concern Over Urban Infrastructure
The incident has raised fresh concerns about aging urban infrastructure and water safety in Jaipur, especially in densely populated residential areas. Residents are now demanding a long-term solution to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities have assured that investigations are underway and that corrective measures will be implemented to ensure safe drinking water for the affected communities.
